About My Guru -
Dr. Anindita Sen

Dr. Anindita Sen is the founder, President and artistic director of Nrityangan Kathak Academy in Carmel, IN. She has trained in the Lucknow gharana of Kathak in Kolkata, India for over 20 years. Her guru Shrimati Amita Dutt herself trained under Pandit Birju Maharajji who is considered the Legend of Kathak. Anindita has performed and given lecture demonstrations in several cities in India, the US, and the UK.

Even though Anindita is a scientist by profession, Nrityangan arose from her innate passion for Kathak and is one of the best Kathak Academies in the entire state of Indiana. Through her dance school, Anindita has been imparting Kathak training since 1994 to several students in Iowa, North Carolina, and currently in Carmel, IN. Within the last 20 years Anindita and/or her students have performed at the North America Bengali Conference in Madison Square Garden, India Association of Indianapolis Diwali and 50th Anniversary events at the Murat, IAI India Day festivals, Indiana State Fair, Indiana International Festival, Asian Fest, DePauw University Multicultural and Community Life event, Greencastle Summer Music Festival, Hindu Temple of Central Indiana events, Sangam organized by Lilly India Network, Navrang, Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Jackson Center for Conducive Education annual gala, Indiana Deaf School, Heartland Film Festival-Journey to India gala, Eli Lilly Multicultural event and the Tri-State Durga Puja, to name a few. In 2014, Anindita was instrumental in organizing a live performance by Padmavibhushan Pandit Birju Maharajji, Saswati Sen and other members of the Kalashram troupe for the very first time in Indiana.  In 2015, Anindita partnered with Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University to host Ragamala Dance Theater.  Between 2011 to 2015, Anindita has served as a faculty member at the Academy of Gregory Hancock Dance Theater (GHDT) and is currently President of the Board of Directors of GHDT where she has served for the last 5 years. Anindita and her students have partnered with GHDT in multiple productions including “A Night in India” and more recently “There’s No Place Like Home”. Anindita has also collaborated with the Carmel Symphony Orchestra in their Summer and Fall concert series.

About Me

A disciple of Dr. Anindita Sen at the Nrityangan Kathak Academy in Indiana since 2018, Ashwini has dedicated years to the rigorous study of Kathak. A major milestone in her journey was completing her Rang Manch Pranam in 2024 under her Guru’s guidance, marking her formal transition into performing as a soloist.

Selected Performance Highlights

Ashwini has had the honor of performing Kathak at various venues across the country. Her performances include both solo and ensemble works, few of which are mentioned below:

  • 2025: All Indian Dance Festival at Carnegie Hall, NYC; Hindu Temple of Central Indiana Fundraiser Gala; Carmel County Diwali Festival; Hindu Temple of Central Indiana Anniversary Celebrations.

  • 2024: Performances at Indiana Statehouse (Soloist); Indiana Spine Group (Soloist & Group); Carmel Symphony Orchestra at Coxhall Gardens in Carmel, Kannada Association Diwali Festival (Soloist), Carmel County Diwali Festival at Midtown Plaza.

  • 2021–2023: Tri-State Durga Puja; Carmel International Festival; Asian Fest at the Global Village Welcome Center.

  • Kathak Academy Showcases: Performed in a variety of classical choreographies for the Nrityangan Kathak Academy Annual Showcases (2019–2025).

Originally from Bangalore, India, Ashwini moved to the U.S. in 2014 for her Master’s degree. She is a Software Engineer at Salesforce and a competitive athlete, currently holding the title of Indiana State Women’s Table Tennis Champion. She currently resides in Zionsville, Indiana.
